Africa’s biggest dam Grand Ethiopian Renaissance begins fifth turbine power generation

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has achieved a major milestone with the activation of its fifth operational turbine Unit 6 now generating power at 401.26 MW, exceeding its rated capacity of 400 MW with 100.32% efficiency. This marks continued progress in Ethiopia’s hydropower expansion. GERD is designed to house 11 turbines each with around 400 MW capacity. Engineers credit the performance to optimized turbine efficiency and precise engineering enabling smooth integration into the national grid. In addition to Unit 6 Turbine No. 5 is undergoing final commissioning and is expected to be operational shortly. Units 7 and 8 are already functional further enhancing the dam’s overall power output. The Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation oversees this transformative project which is poised to significantly boost the country’s renewable energy capacity.
