Ethiopia announces tender for restoring major railway construction

Ethiopia has reopened a tender to resume work on a 392-kilometer railway project aimed at strengthening its transportation infrastructure. Initially launched in 2015 in collaboration with Turkish contractor Yapi Merkezi, the $1.7 billion project was financed by Turkish Exim Bank and Credit Suisse. The Ethiopian government is now inviting international bidders to evaluate the damages and costs associated with restarting the work. Once completed, the railway will link the eastern and northern economic zones, significantly enhancing interregional trade and mobility. It will also connect with major existing railway lines including the Mekelle-Tajura and Addis Ababa-Djibouti routes, supporting broader regional integration. The revival of this project marks a renewed effort by Ethiopia to rebuild and modernize critical infrastructure, drive economic growth and improve logistics and transportation efficiency despite past challenges and delays due to conflict.
