AfDB approves financing of $260 Million Uganda-South Sudan Interconnection Project

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved $154 million in financing for the $260 million Uganda–South Sudan electricity interconnection project aimed at integrating South Sudan into the East African Power Pool. The remaining funds will be sourced from Uganda South Sudan and the European Union. The project will enhance electricity reliability affordability and enable cross-border energy trade benefiting both nations. A 299-kilometer interconnection line will be constructed between Olwiyo in Uganda and Gumbo in South Sudan with each country handling approximately half the distance. The project includes the creation of two 400/132/33 kV substations in Gumbo and Biba as well as upgrades to the Karuma and Olwiyo substations. It also involves installing distribution networks 1,000 last-mile connections and components for capacity building joint coordination gender equality and livelihood restoration. According to Bhebhe Themba AfDB’s Country Manager for South Sudan the project will unlock business opportunities and boost local industry and production.
